Ash Grange Nursery Primary School is nestled in Ash, a welcoming village and civil parish in the borough of
Guildford, Surrey.
Like many community-focused schools, Ash Grange prioritises the well-being and safety of its pupils.
With this mission in mind, the school took proactive steps to enhance pedestrian safety by installing brightly coloured X-last pencil bollards along the kerbline, clearly delineating the pavement from the carriageway.
Site challenges
Situated on Ash Church Road—a bustling bus route weaving through a vibrant residential area—the school is surrounded by a church, local businesses, and provides a pathway to Ash Train Station and a nearby level crossing. During peak hours, heavy traffic posed a significant risk to pupils as they arrived at and left the school.
The school’s frontage, adjacent to a busy bus stop and lane, had previously relied on standard guardrails to prevent children from inadvertently running into the road. However, these guardrails proved vulnerable; they were easily damaged on impact and frequently required costly replacement.
The solution
To address these concerns, the local authority partnered with the school to introduce an innovative safety solution: the X-Last Pencil bollard. Specially engineered to be robust
and reboundable, these bollards are designed to minimise maintenance and maximise protection.
Their playful pencil shape is perfectly suited to a school environment, while the vibrant yellow colour and reflective bands ensure they stand out to motorists and pedestrians alike. Replacing the old guardrails, the new bollards act as durable delineators, effectively segregating the carriageway from the pavement.
The unique material composition allows them to rebound to their original position within 30 minutes of anything from minor bumps to high-speed impacts. For added flexibility, the bollards were installed in NAL retention sockets, enabling quick installation and easy removal when access is needed.
