Active Travel Scheme
North Hannover Street, Glasgow
Glasgow City Council reaffirmed its commitment to active travel and community safety through a recent road improvements scheme, focusing on North Hannover Street.
Funded by the Active Travel Fund, this initiative aimed to upgrade cycling infrastructure and enhance safety for all road users.
Implementation
The project involved the installation of durable X-Last Nuvo and Nuvo Sign bollards along the city centre cycle lanes. These bollards serve as clear visual and physical barriers; both models feature reflective banding, and the Nuvo Sign includes a double-sided sign face with bespoke badging. All bollards are installed in NAL Composite Sockets, allowing for rapid removal when access is needed.
Specification
The X-Last bollards significantly improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians, particularly residents and city centre commuters. Their design reduces the risk of serious injury upon impact. In addition, the X-Last complies with BS EN 12767, the European standard for roadside support structures, earning a safety rating of NE4.
Outcome
The North Hannover Street scheme highlights the value of investing in innovative infrastructure to promote cycling and walking, reduce maintenance costs, and create safer, more attractive streetscapes. The success of the project underscores the importance of targeted funding and collaborative planning to deliver tangible benefits for Glasgow’s communities.
