Active Travel Scheme
Cowcaddens Road, Glasgow
Glasgow City Council upgraded Cowcaddens Road with X-Last Nuvo Sign bollards, funded by the Active Travel Fund, to improve safety and clearly separate pedestrian walkways, cycle lanes, and roads.
Implementation
The bollards are mounted in shallow-depth composite sockets engineered to secure the bollards’ root. This innovative lock-and-pin design enables straightforward installation without supplementary civil works. The demountable system offers operational flexibility, allowing for the swift removal of bollards when additional space is required, such as for the passage of wide loads.
Specification
The bollards deliver both visual and physical separation, significantly enhancing safety for cyclists, pedestrians, local residents, and city centre commuters. The X-Last Nuvo Sign bollards are engineered to minimise the risk of serious injury in the event of impact. The product also complies with BS EN 12767 European standard for roadside support structures, achieving a safety rating of NE4.
Furthermore, the unique properties of X-Last give the bollard robust yet flexible strength, designed to withstand multiple impacts without loss of performance, reducing maintenance costs.
Outcome
The Cowcaddens Road scheme demonstrates the value of investing in innovative infrastructure to promote active travel, reduce long-term maintenance costs, and enhance urban streetscapes. The successful delivery of this project underscores the critical role of targeted funding and collaboration in achieving measurable benefits for Glasgow’s road users.
